"The Hymn of Joy"[1] (steadily called "Joyful, Joyful We Adore Thee" after the primary line) is a poem written through Henry van Dyke in 1907 with the goal of musically atmosphere it to the well-known "Ode to Joy" melody of the general movement of Ludwig van Beethoven's final symphony, Symphony No. 9.[2]

Background

Van Dyke wrote this poem in 1907 while staying at the house of Williams College president Harry Augustus Garfield. He used to be serving as a visitor preacher at Williams on the time. He instructed his host that the native Berkshire Mountains have been his inspiration.[3]

The lyrics have been first published in 1911 in Van Dyke's Book of Poems, Third Edition.[3]

These verses are simple expressions of not unusual Christian emotions and wishes in this present time—hymns of as of late that can be sung in combination by way of individuals who know the thought of the age, and don't seem to be afraid that any fact of science will damage faith, or any revolution on earth overthrow the dominion of heaven. Therefore this can be a hymn of believe and joy and hope.

"This hymn is generally considered by hymnologists to be one of the most joyous expressions of hymn lyrics in the English language."[3] It may be used as a Christian music for youngsters.[4]

The hymn is a distinguished theme in Christmas action film Die Hard (1988).

Lauryn Hill and the forged of Sister Act 2 (1993) recorded a joyous, gospel-hip hop infused version of hymn (titled "Joyful, Joyful") for the film's soundtrack. This model incorporates a bridge that sampled Janet Jackson's 1986 unmarried, "What Have You Done for Me Lately".

Amy Grant recorded the song, which seems on her 2005 studio album Rock of Ages... Hymns and Faith. It also seems on her 2015 compilation album Be Still and Know... Hymns & Faith.

2d Chapter of Acts additionally recorded it, appearing as track Four at the first of their two 'Hymns' albums (Sparrow CD, SPD 1287, 1991).
